Drivers for Heat Pumps
by Molly Lempriere
Molly Lempriere asks, "What will drive the adoption of Heat Pumps?"
Her article in Current, What drives Heat Pumps? published on 23 September considers tariffs, consumers and the government.
The launch of the first ever heat pump tariff by Good Energy in July is a good start.
She explores the other drivers and picks up quotes from the present and past Chairmen of the GSHPA, but concludes that the main cards are in the hands of the Chancellor of the Exchequer: Rishi Sunak needs to reduce the Climate Change Levies on electricity (which were imposed long ago when much of our electricity was generated from burning coal) which are preventing the adoption of heat pumps and transfer these levies onto gas heating which now generates about 37% of total UK carbon emissions.
