Heat Pump Conference
Friday 22 October 2021
The Coniston Hotel, Skipton, Yorkshire

The 2021 Heat Pump Conference included a number of lively and well attended presentations which stimulated debate in the wake of the Heat and Buildings Strategy published on 19 October. We include a summary of the presentations below, together with copies of the presentations.

GSHPA Council

Heat Pumps for Retrofit

Laura Bishop – GSHPA

The UK is full of buildings dating back many years, hundreds of years in some cases, with poor fabric condition and high heat loss. Can heat pumps be used in these buildings? If so, how can they be successfully deployed and what are they steps needed to ensure a good outcome for the developer and the owner? Retrofitting with heat pumps

The Government's approach to clean heat

Lord Callanan – Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at BEIS

In all pathways to Net Zero, we expect heat pumps to play a major role. That is why Government has committed to grow the heat pump market to 600,000 installation a year by 2028. Lord Callanan will outline how government is supporting industry to grow the market for heat pumps and build confidence across the supply chain with its Heat and Buildings Strategy. See text of Lord Callanan's speech.

Pumping up policy to deliver a heat pump mass market

Dr Jan Rosenow – RAP Principal and European Programme Director

Dr Jan Rosenow will highlight the key challenges and opportunities for rolling out heat pumps in the UK. He will set out which policy levers need to be pulled to achieve the government's heat pump target of 600,000 installations a year by 2028.

What part can MCS play in accelerating heat decarbonisation?

Ian Rippin – MCS Chief Executive Officer

Ian Rippin analyses the sales of GSHPs and ASHPs from MCS data and identifies the trends emerging in the market.

The Coniston

What Government policy lies ahead on heat decarbonisation

Caroline Bragg – ADE Head of Policy

The long-awaited Heat and Buildings Strategy is one of many key policy announcements expected to accelerate decarbonizing of heating. Caroline Bragg sets out what we know already, what we can expect and what needs to happen to ensure we can get the right zero carbon heating systems in the right place.

Digging the dirt: a Scottish perspective on heat pumps

Helen Melone – Scottish Renewables

Helen talks about the heat pump market in Scotland, the background to the heat pump sector deal and its progress so far, and the work Scottish Renewables has been doing in preparation for COP26.

Drilling into the detail – raising standards in the quality of ground source boreholes

Richard Fielden – British Drilling Association

There is very little regulation, inspection or certification in domestic borehole installations. How can we assure customers that boreholes have been drilled to the correct depth and loops properly installed? How can we assure the owner that the drilling equipment being used is legal, safe, fit for purpose and the operators are competent? Richard Fielden outlines how the BDA Audit Scheme, already in use in the site investigation drilling sector, can be used to provide independent, externally verified and accredited assessment of drillers and drilling businesses.

Options for Low and Zero Carbon Technologies

Steve Hunt – CIBSE Merseyside & North Wales

The road to ‘Net Zero Carbon’ is far from defined but with the forthcoming changes to Part L and the subsequent ‘Future Homes Standard 2025’ the direction of travel is set. How does that translate into practical low carbon systems. Steve Hunt will provide an overview of the options, some of the challenges and an indication of what to expect.

Ground Source Heat Pumps – a regulator's perspective

Ross Lowrie – The Environment Agency

Got a contract? Got the kit? Let's get installing! If only life in underground heat were so easy. In this talk the Environment Agency will recap the regulatory requirements for heat pumps, focussing on upcoming changes to regulatory regimes and sharing our experience of applications that fly through the process, and those that don't.
